Your role
As a Senior Software Engineer you build the product end-to-end — backend, frontend, infrastructure, and the AI pipeline at the core of the platform. You'd be one of our first engineering hires: you own problems from the conversation with our grant team through to production, and you shape how we work technically.
What you'll do
Ship features end-to-end, independently — including the UI
Extend our AI pipeline: prompt engineering, context management, cost control, multi-provider setup (Bedrock, Anthropic, OpenAI)
Build out our evaluation practice: own prompt quality, model selection, and regression detection
Run and debug production (Sentry, CloudWatch, Postgres performance)
Work closely with our grant team — you build from real user problems, not tickets
Help shape architecture, standards, and the technical roadmap
How we'll measure success
Our central measure is the time it takes from starting a new project to delivering and submitting the applications. Everything we build — shipped features, platform reliability, the quality of our AI output, every manual step we automate — feeds into that cycle time. And ultimately into what actually matters: our customers' ability to get their projects funded.
Nice to have
German at B1 or above — our customers and product are German-first; the team works bilingually, but the right person without German works too
Experience with AI agents and tool-calling workflows in production
Experience with Terraform
What you bring
- Several years with TypeScript and Node, plus real depth in Postgres (JSONB, query performance, migrations)
- Confidence across the stack: Next.js 15 / React Query on the frontend, Express and BullMQ on the backend, AWS (ECS, RDS, Terraform) for infrastructure
- Hands-on experience with AI pipelines in production — beyond simply calling an API
- Strong debugging instinct in live systems
- High autonomy: you ship without hand-holding and close the loop on problems yourself
- A usability-first mindset — we have no designer; you ship interfaces that genuinely work for grant writers
- AI-native: tools like Claude Code or Cursor are part of how you work
